"The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are impelled to commit our lives and resources to act in solidarity with the economically poor of the world, especially women and children."
--Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Institute Direction Statement

The new "third wave" of ministry is affordable housing, which focuses not just on constructing buildings, but on creating healthy communities. The lack of affordable housing is creating a huge gap between the poor and the rest of society in America. The Sisters of Mercy are involved in a number of ministries that shelter and care for those most in need of housing. Mercy Housing, Inc., headquartered in Denver and originally founded in 1981 by Sister Mary Terese Tracy in Omaha, addresses the need by creatively leveraging funding and supporting residents with services they need to steady their lives.
