Mercy Day - September 24, 2012

The celebration of Mercy Day on September 24 each year by the Sisters of Mercy is a dual moment of rejoicing. For many years the Church has celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Mercy on September 24. The Sisters of Mercy are dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy inMercy_Day_photo a special way. On this date in 1827, Catherine McAuley opened the first House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin, Ireland.

This was a house of welcome for Catherine in several ways. Catherine was eager to welcome girls and young women in need of safe housing and education to live in this house and receive instruction. This had been a goal that motivated her to use her inheritance to build the House of Mercy.

Catherine also welcomed young women to join her in the work of Mercy. It was a work that could best be done in collaboration with others because of its scope and because the support of others in community and prayer would root them in God, the source of Mercy.

Council Bluffs Celebrates Mercy Day

 Our Lady of Mercy Day, celebrated by Sisters of Mercy worldwide, is a doubly special date for Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluff, IA. It was also on this date 125 years ago that the hospital began. Stacy Goodman, hospital spokesperson, asks, "Is it coincidental that the hospital opened on Mercy Day?? Knowing how the Community cherishes and respects this date, it was most likely intentionally planned says WMW Archivist Monte Kniffen.

The hospital started officially celebrating its milestone anniversary on May 22 with a countdown of 125 days of celebration. It began with the blessing of the Mercy Hospital Healing Garden by Bishop Richard Pates of the Diocese of Des Moines. The days of celebration will come to a close on Sept. 24 with a program and an ice cream social, Stacy said.

Two Sisters Win Awards

Sister Marion Cypser of Chicago, IL, was awarded the Outstanding Administrator Award by Congressman Danny K. Davis on Aug. 4, in cooperation with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Rush University Medical Center. Marion has been principal of St. Catherine-St. Lucy school for 34 years, serving children in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood. 

Congressman Davis noted that Marion and her staff offer a challenging and excellent Christian education in a creative and safe environment.  "Marion's deep belief that education is a means out of the cycle of poverty drives her efforts to provide a value-centered educational setting.  These are the values that are necessary to live in a multi-cultural world where peace, justice and equality are hopes for the future," he said.

Marion was the Catholic school administrator among 10 administrators honored.  There were 500 in attendance at the presentation.

Congratulations to Sister Rosemary Connelly of Chicago. She was named a 2012 Illinoisan of the Day by the Illinois State Fair Museum Foundation. She was honored on Aug. 13 at this year's fair in Springfield.

Rosemary was named for her decades of service to Misericordia, a home for more than 600 developmentally disabled children and adults.

A former elementary and high school teacher, she also served as chaplain at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael, Calif. She moved to Denver in 1985 where her love of music and liturgy became the focus of her ministry.
